  1. John D. Rockefeller

John D. Rockefeller became one of the most famous businessmen of the 20th century. He headed the Standard Oil Company and became one of the world’s wealthiest men. That’s why he’s often included in successful entrepreneurs stories. Rockefeller used much of his wealth to support various charitable causes.

By the year 1882 Rockefeller almost had a monopoly of the US oil industry. However, in the process the country passed various antitrust laws that affected his business. Later in life Rockefeller focused on philanthropy before his death in 1937.

Rockefeller and his business partners founded the Standard Oil Company in 1870. The company then started to buy out smaller oil companies. Within two years the company owned most of the oil refineries in the Cleveland, Ohio region within just two years. Such results are one of the reasons he’s often included in successful entrepreneurs stories.

He continued to expand his company. It was ruled in 1890 that Standard Oil was a monopoly. However, after the government broke up the corporation it formed a holding company later.

Martha Stewart is a media Mogul from the U.S. She’s most famous for her TV show and magazine “Martha Stewart Living.” She became famous by writing books on topics such as cooking, decorating, and entertaining. She then added a magazine and TV program. She resigned in 2002 when convicted of insider trading.

Stewart was released from prison in March 2005. Her future success is one of the reasons she’s often included in successful entrepreneurs stories. Stewart launched two new shoes. They included a TV talk show and spin-off of “The Apprentice.”

Ross Perot is a US businessman who ran for president in 1992 and 1996 as an independent. He’s often included in successful entrepreneurs stories. In fact, he became one of the most successful third-party candidate in US history.

Perot worked from IBM from 1957-1962. He then formed the company Electronic Data Systems, which he sold to General Motors in 1984 for $2.5 billion. Perot went on to become one of the top businessmen in the US. He also won almost 20% of the popular vote in 1992.

Bill Gates is also included in several successful entrepreneurs stories. In recent years he’s also become known for his philanthropy.  Gates co-founded Microsoft in 1975. In only a quarter of a century Gates built a multi-billion-dollar tech giant and became the world’s richest person.

Gates earned his money by tweaking existing tech into a particular market. He then used business know-how and game-changing promotion to sell his operating systems.

Gates first used computers while he was attending Lakeside School in Seattle, Washington. His first business was called Traf-O-Data. It was a program used to measure the flow of traffic in the Seattle region.
